Venus snaps Tammy's eleven-match win streak
Tammy's profileWIMBLEDON England July 01, 2008
Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn saw her 12th consecutive Wimbledon main draw appearance end in a quarter-final round 6-4, 6-3 defeat at the hand of American seventh-seeded Venus Williams at All England Club, England earlier today.
Venus Williams, four-time Wimbledon winner and defending champion, was too strong in an hour and 35 minutes 6-4, 6-3 victory, to improve to 7-0 lifetime against the Thai 31-year-old. The power-serving Williams, who has not dropped a set in five matches, served 8 aces and won four of the 8 break points she held, whereas the Thai veteran converted only one of her 10 break points.
" Her game and her style are really hard because she has a big serve and big groundstrokes. I tried to be aggressive and step up. But she served very well. When she was acing me many times, I was like, ' In the next life I want to be as tall as her, please! In that kind of tough situation, she made big serves on the 'T'. That's how the great players do it in the very critical times. So what can I do ? I tried the best I could. " said Tammy, who became the first Thai player to reach Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Tamarine, who awarded 250 ranking points by reaching a quarterfinal, had a solid records and several career breakthroughs on grass. She had sixth career Top 10 victory, four of those six have come on grass, defeating Serbian world No.3 Jelena Jankovic in Wimbledon fourth-round this year including one just over a week ago in the final of 's-Hertogenbosch, where she beat world No.9 Dinara Safina to win her second career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title. Tammy was a finalist in the Wimbledon Junior tournament in 1995 and has been a consistent performer at the All England Club ever since, reaching the last eight one time and the fourth round six times.
In junior competitions, third-seeded Noppawan Lertcheewakarn(ITF-5), lone Thai hopes in the 64-players draw, reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands. The Thai 16-year-old from Chiangmai sets up third round clash with Australia's Tyra Calderwood, for a spot to the quarter-finals.....

" Today I played well. I served for the first set at 6-5 and I had 2 set points but I can't close it out. She served so well in the tie-break and took the first set. She is a tall girl and has a big serve and very good backhand. But I returned serve well today. And I tried to attacked her forehand side. " said Noppawan, who has become the highest-ever Thai player to be ranked on the ITF World Junior Circuit after winning three consecutive titles in Asia in 2008.
